Does God Hear our Prayers?

Does God hear our prayers? Whether you’ve grown up in church or you’ve never stepped foot in a church, you know that the answer of the Bible is a resounding yes. But perhaps a better question is “How does God hear our prayers?” I live on a busy street, so I hear noises constantly, yet If you asked me to recount what I heard, I wouldn’t even know where to start because I rarely, if ever, give any thought to them. Parents will tell you that they hear children’s screaming differently as parents then they did before they had kids. When a friend from school talks to me about national security, I hear it much differently than when I hear the president of the United States talk about national security. I hear things that my parents tell me differently than I hear things that strangers tell me. We hear things differently depending on many different factors. So how does God hear our prayers? Does he hear them as white noise? Does he hear them compassionately, judgmentally, indifferently?  The Scriptures answer these questions for us. Specifically, the Scriptures teach us that God does hear our prayers and hears them as both a sovereign king and a loving father.

An Important Question: Do You Trust God?

Scripture teaches us that in this life we will face trials.  Job states this in Job 14:1, “Man, who is born of women, is short-lived and full of turmoil. . .” Jesus said it in John 16:33, “In this world you will have tribulation. . .” James also promises trials as he wrote in James 1:2, “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials…”  For Patti and me, the calendar year 2015 seemed full of turmoil, tribulation, and various trials.  All required us to trust our Sovereign God as we dealt with the loss of employment for a family member, the death of an unbelieving brother-in-law after a lengthy illness, a reoccurrence of a potentially deadly disease in a family member, and dealing with the onset of dementia in an aging family member.  Each of these trials could have become overwhelming if we did not have the promises of scripture to lean on and a loving Heavenly Father who promises to never leave us nor forsake us. (Deut. 31:6-8, Joshua 1:5, Hebrews 13:5)

Lately, the buzz in the media has been centered around certain political figures jostling to become the next President of the United States. And as the drama of state primaries makes its crescendo towards November, the outlook already seems extremely bleak. In what is shaping up to be a finale of choosing between the lesser of two evils, this year’s election process is leaving many of us justifiably apprehensive about who #45 will be and what kind of era they will usher in. What should we make of the presidential hopefuls, and how should we think through the inevitable political change that looms upon our nation’s horizon?
